Dirty Baits

Had a window of opportunity tonight so I decided to brave the wind. I was pleasantly surprised that the wind did die down....for awhile, then it kicked back up to 15+. I ran a bit further south in hopes of finding cleaner water, but let's just say that didn't happen. I couldn't keep baits clean for more than 15 minutes, if that. I did manage one knock down that was definitely a fish. I only know because it left behind a nice sized scale on the hook. Many guys on the radio said they had been out for hours with little to no activity.

Didn't Come Through

The pressure was on me this weekend to catch some fish for a family Easter get together. Even thought I haven't been feeling well, I figured it wouldn't be too tough to catch a few...wrong. After several hours on the water on both Friday and Saturday...nothing at all. The water is still really dirty north of Bloody Point and I didn't feel like getting caught in a storm so I didn't run further south. Of course, now the weather looks great (Sunday)!!

Opening Weekend

Will this wind ever stop? I don't know what day was worse...yesterday's gale force wind coming from the east or today's 30 knots coming from the west. We gave it a try today and braved 3-5 footers until noon. I also heard that two boats capsized this morning around TP (I believe they did get rescued) in some crazy big swells. The captain had a rough time keeping our heading which made for some difficult fishing. And of course last night's party didn't help our crew either, but we did manage two fish. One about 32" and the other that went around 40" (it had to be 20" across the belly).

On the Hunt

Went out for a few hours in search of some "cows" but didn't find much. I'm not positive, but I think I did have two bites. I found some good bait balls and followed some Gannets, but not much happening yet. Don't know if the 10-12 tankers are a sign of our economy or what, but the last several months there have been more tankers in the bay then I can remember. If we get a couple of decent days of warm weather, things should start to take shape...can't wait.

Shake Down

Well, it's that time again. I ran south with my buddy R&R for my 1st run of the year. The wind didn't cooperate as it kicked up a notch to maybe 15 to 20...not so fun with a chilly morning to boot. Saw some promising signs but didn't see anything worth throwing the line in the water. We came up empty handed today. The good news is my boat is running just fine and I'm ready for a good spring season.
