Things are Picking Up

It looks like the summer pattern is finally in full swing. Found plenty of breaking fish on calm seas with hardly any humidity tonight. Pretty much fish after fish for the better part of the evening. It's nice when you find the fish right away and they stay up the entire night!!! Nothing over 23" tonight, but they were feisty and gave a good pull on my line. The low humidity made for a spectacular sunset.

Not a Bird in Sight

Yesterday we decided to take a ride down to Harrington Harbour to meet up with some friends. So, I brought along a couple of rods just in case we found some breakers along the way. It was a little bumpy heading south, but I didn't see anything. The tide was running and there was plenty of bait, but the west side of the bay didn't have any signs of life last night. Everyone had a good time at HH and the ride home was great under a full moon.

Fish Galore

Fished tonight and found 'em in a big way. There were acres of breaking fish for the better part of the evening. They were in smaller pods but the pods were as far as you could see. Most of the fish were between 17"-20". I couldn't believe the massive bait balls of 12" bunker. I'm not sure if I snagged one or it actually ate my fly, but I had my fingers crossed that something would start attacking them. Unfortunately it never happened. Just another happy ending to a busy week at work!!!

Mid-Week Dinks

Got out tonight for an hour or two and didn't have much luck. Caught a few dinks, but nothing over 15". The only fish I saw caught were off of the Bay Bridge pilings. No breaking fish up north tonight.

Hot Slow Weekend

This has to be one of the hottest July's on record. After some early morning crabbing yesterday (caught about 3 dozen) and searching for breaking fish today, I'm officially done being outside for the day. It was a slow weekend all around...slow crabbing and fishing.

Couldn't Find the Big Ones Tonight

Spend a couple hours tonight with AC racing around from north to south from east to west and still couldn't find anything bigger than 17" tonight. We did find several pods of breakers but they were small and up/down very quickly. The wind finally laid down which made for a pretty evening on the bay. The highlight was the Solomon's sailboat race that we past coming home.

Tonight Started Off with a Bang

As I pulled back on the throttle tonight I immediately saw a flock of birds working and hooked up. A nice fish..25"- 27"er. Then another and another. Don't tell me this is going to be two great nights in a row? Well, it didn't turn out to be that way at all. I managed several nice fish and then nothing other than one dink for the rest of the night. I fished next to my friend AC for most of the night and he didn't have much luck either. I will say, the grade of fish I caught were nice ones (mid 20s) so they are still around.

Tough Morning Crabbing

It wasn't as easy as last week, but we managed a few dozen. Even though we were up at 4:30 several guys beat us to the crabbing grounds, so we had to head somewhere different. I now know why it's important to keep the trot line taught. At first I had a tough time weaving back and forth trying to follow the line that must have settled in a funky way. After some adjustments, we finally started catching some crabs. Crabbing so close to home is great and my wife even sent my son down to the dock to join me. He's a natural and only missed a few. Today we caught small crabs on almost every chicken neck...much smaller than last time.

Big Fish Friday

Left the dock around 5:30 to try my luck. Had high hopes of having a BIG night and I wasn't disappointed. Found an amazing scene of acres of breaking fish. I could see the white water from a mile away. Figured I would toss my line and land some teenagers, but when the first fish took me into my backing I knew it was going to be a great night. I caught fish non stop until dark with many, many fish that went between 25" and 30". The biggest fish was just shy of 32"!!! This was , by far, the best big fish summer fishing I have had in a long time (maybe ever).

Double Header

Got up at 4:30 for the second day in a row to get an early start fishing (so much for sleeping in on the holidays). I caught several small fish, but nothing to brag about. It was a beautiful morning without 20 knots!!! I headed in around 9:00 for round two. Picked up my son and daughter (my other daughter wouldn't think about getting up until 11:00), a couple friends with their kids and headed back out. The pressure was on to find fish because it was already getting hot and I knew they wouldn't last. They quickly started landing fish after fish for an hour or so (probably caught 30-40 fish) before we called it a day. Quick and sweet. Everyone had a blast catching perch and spot.

A Change of Pace

Too much wind yesterday for me (after getting beaten up so much lately), so I decided to stay home. Instead I went out an bought a trot line. Today we put in into action. This was my first time, so I had visions of getting a massive "birds nest", having the line wrap around my prop, my "PCV U" breaking on and on. Well, everything went very well. My wife decided to get up at 4:30 with me to try her luck at netting the little rascals. In only 1 1/2 hours

we caught 36 crabs and they were nice ones!!!! This crabbing thing is actually pretty fun (not as much as fishing) and I guess I'll be taking orders for crabs in the days to come.
